The Connection between POM and Sri Sister products and the Kandy Women's Development Centre (WDC)
On trips to Sri Lanka, I spend time visiting and working at the Haragama Womens'sShelter. During my time at the Shelter I work with the women to make a number of signature POM products using their own hand woven fabrics. This collaboration has resulted in POM x Sri Sisters, a line of products made by POM and the women at the Centre. These include hand loomed tea towels and aprons.
POM x Sri Sisters is an attempt to share the incredible handiwork of the women, while providing them with the opportunity to develop their confidence and skills
and gain greater financial independence. All profits from sales of POM x Sri Sisters products
go back to the Centre and other community projects.
We order aprons and tea towels hand made from hand woven fabric by the women at the Centre,as well as additional hand woven fabric for POM to make eye pillow cases and other products

Malini's POM Sri Sister Tea Towel, Apron and Fabric Weaving StoryThe fabric for POM Sri-Sisters tea towel, apron and eye pillow case has been hand woven at the Haragama Women’s Development Centre (WDC) shelter in Sri Lanka by Malini. Malini came to the WDC five years ago seeking refuge from a very difficult life.
She underwent training in hand weaving and was given the job of making these beautifully hand woven POM tea towels and aprons. Weaving at the WDC has made possible sharing her beautiful handiwork and facilitated Malini's transformation from a withdrawn and distressed girl into a more confident, skilled, focused and financially independent woman. You may want to look at the products here. Malini's POM Sri Sister Tea Towel, Apron and Fabric Weaving Story UPDATE Malini has been the weaver of our lovely POM tea towels and her story is featured on our 'POM Volunteer crafts/baking story' flyer. I first met Malini on a trip to Sri Lanka about 5 years ago. She lacked confidence and was shy, withdrawn and illiterate. She had undergone weaving training at the centre and we organised for her to be our POM tea-towel weaver. I visited the centre a couple of years later and was met by a very different Malini. She was much more confident, happy and skilled and proudly handed over her beautifully woven POM tea-towels. Malini had also been able to benefit from attending language classes with the POM teachers who tutor at the centre. She is now able to read and write in Sinhala On my last trip to Sri Lanka 2 years ago we caught up with Malini and enjoyed celebrating her 18th birthday. Tenzin Lekdron and I took her shopping for some clothes as she was preparing to leave the centre to return home to her village and begin a job. She is pictured above in her new clothes. Her return home unfortunately did not work out due to family problems. She recently returned to the Haragama Shelter, as she had no where else to go. Tenzin Lekdron and I decided to employ her as our POM weaver. We have placed an order for tea-towels and fabric to make our gingham aprons. Malini will be paid by POM to weave these. We plan to set up a bank account for her and to pay her directly for her work Thank you all for your wonderful support to allow this project to go ahead. |

Guansahar School - Nepal

Heaven Hill school is located in the small, rural village of Guanshahar, Nepal. It provides a progressive education that attempts to promote and inspire confidence and enthusiasm through learning. The principle and teachers value each of their students and work to make sure that children are attending school and performing to a high standard.
Many children have to walk around 2 hours to and from school everyday, some children are encouraged to work rather than attend, and others only have access to one meal a day. These issues are countered by the principle and teachers who value each of their students and speak regularly with their parents and the community to develop effective solutions.
POM funds to Heaven Hill are used to...
Build more classrooms that are made by locals, using locally sourced tiles and materials
Pay teaching staff
Purchase school materials
Ensure the wellbeing of its students
